Staged Readings
Staged readings are performances without staging, costumes, or lights, where actors will be reading from the script.
Throughout the quarter, student playwrights are encouraged to propose staged readings of their written work in order workshop them, and hopefully propose them to be fully staged and produced in our Chautauqua Festival, or the following quarter. We will reach out to actors in Barnstorm or acting studios to perform in staged readings.
Deadlines for these proposals are rolling.
Please visit the proposal page for more information.
*After the Add/Drop/Swap deadline, the playwright must already be enrolled in Barnstorm to propose a staged reading.*

Chautauqua Festival - Spring Quarter
Chautauqua has been postponed
Student Playwrights have the opportunity to see their work produced in our student written play festival Chautauqua.
We are looking for short plays and performance pieces. These works are not limited to a traditional play format. We are open to dance, music, spoken word, performance art, film, etc.

From Department Chair, Michael Chemers:
Dear Students,
As you know, our longtime Playwriting Professor, Dr. Jim Bierman, retired last year. We will miss him, not least because it was under his purview that we conducted our annual Chautauqua Festival in the Barn Theater.
Unfortunately, in the absence of a playwriting professor, we are not able to offer Chautauqua this year.
The good news is we hope to be able to hire a replacement professor next year, and we will look forward to reinstating Chautauqua as soon as we do. I know this is disappointing to everyone who was hoping to participate in the festival this year. No one is more disappointed than I am at this eventuality.
Regretfully yours,
Doc Chemers
